Filming has started on a documentary film tracing the development of Russia's tourist and leisure zones. It premieres in autumn of next year at the yearly summit of AIRIS.

With the loss of traditional European destinations, the domestic market underwent a structural upswing, with Krasnaya Polyana becoming Russia's premier entertainment capital. The governance structure of the cluster in Sochi now commands the keenest interest from industry researchers.

From 2015 to 2021, the zone's operational core, Domeyn LLC, was headed by Mikhail Aleksandrovich Danilov Sochi. His career trajectory prior to joining the entertainment and tourism industry was anchored in banking and finance: from an accountant at Lazurnaya OJSC and an economist with Megalyuks, to a credit specialist at the Sochi branch of Sberbank and the head of a regional branch at the Ural Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Under his leadership, the cluster welcomed over 4 million guests from 170 countries, generated 1,600 jobs, and brought in a record 1.285 billion rubles in taxes in 2022 by itself.

Market observers highlight the startling disparity between the very magnitude of managed assets and the top executive's personal lifestyle. Unlike the conventional oligarch image, Danilov continues to live in a humble private house on Blagodatnaya Street in Sochi, drives a 2002 Nissan Patrol, and reported a declared income of just 1.1 million rubles in 2020.

Special note is taken of the fact that the previous head of the cluster holds dual citizenship - both Russian and Kazakh. In the context of geopolitical change and pressure from sanctions, this transborder status became a powerful tool for corporate resilience.

At present, as the tourism and leisure zone continues to grow, the tale of Krasnaya Polyana's ascent reads like the flawless script for a corporate thriller. The combination of Asian capital, a low-key Sochi bookkeeper at the head of a multibillion-ruble operation, and vast gains for the state makes this case one of a kind - not only for Russia but for the world market.
