The announcement of the NBA 2K27 cover athlete has already sparked plenty of discussion among basketball fans. San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama was selected as the Standard Edition cover star, but New York Knicks center Andre Drummond believes another player deserved serious consideration.
Drummond recently took to X to question why Knicks superstar Jalen Brunson was not among the candidates for the cover. With Brunson coming off a championship-winning season and earning NBA Finals MVP honors, Drummond's comments quickly generated conversation among fans.
Victor Wembanyama Named NBA 2K27 Cover Athlete
Victor Wembanyama will headline the Standard Edition of NBA 2K27, marking another major milestone in the young star's rapidly growing career.
The French center enjoyed an outstanding 2025-26 campaign, averaging 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 3.1 blocks across 64 games. His performances helped the Spurs win 62 games and reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014.
Wembanyama also made history by becoming the youngest player to win Defensive Player of the Year and the first unanimous winner of the award.
His selection therefore makes considerable sense from both a basketball and marketing perspective. He represents the next generation of NBA superstars and has quickly become one of the league's most recognizable players.
Why Andre Drummond Thinks Jalen Brunson Deserved Consideration
While Wembanyama's selection is difficult to dispute, Jalen Brunson also had a strong case.
Brunson was the centerpiece of the Knicks' championship run in 2026. His leadership and scoring ability played a crucial role in helping New York capture the NBA title, while his performances earned him Finals MVP recognition.
That achievement made Brunson one of the biggest stories in the NBA heading into NBA 2K27. For Drummond, who recently joined the Knicks, the decision naturally raised a question: why wasn't Brunson seriously considered for the cover?
The debate is especially interesting because NBA 2K covers often reflect more than just individual statistics. Championship success, popularity, cultural impact, and a player's connection with fans can all influence the decision.
What This Means for NBA 2K27 Players
The cover debate is only one part of the excitement surrounding NBA 2K27. Players are also preparing to build MyTEAM lineups, upgrade their collections, and compete across the game's various modes.
For MyTEAM players, NBA 2K27 MT Coins remain an important part of building a competitive roster. MT can be used to acquire cards and improve a team's overall strength, making the in-game currency particularly valuable for players who want to progress more efficiently.
Players researching NBA 2K27 MT may also encounter third-party marketplaces such as z2u.com, where different gaming-related services and listings are available. Anyone considering third-party options should carefully review seller information, pricing, delivery methods, and platform requirements before making a purchase.
NBA 2K27 Release Date
NBA 2K27 Standard Edition is scheduled to launch worldwide on September 4. Players who purchase an eligible special edition can get early access beginning August 28.
That gives basketball fans plenty to look forward to, from the new gameplay systems and MyTEAM content to the opportunity to play with the latest generation of NBA stars.
Whether fans agree with Victor Wembanyama's selection or believe Jalen Brunson should have received the honor, the discussion itself shows how much attention the NBA 2K27 cover continues to generate.
For now, Wembanyama officially represents the next chapter of the NBA 2K franchise. Brunson, meanwhile, will have to settle for being one of the game's most intriguing players to watch when NBA 2K27 launches.
